The Pat Kenny show today on Radio 1 had a representative of eircom
on-air taking questions about broadband from Pat’s listeners. The show
appeared to be snowed under with callers and emailers but Pat Kenny
had eircom commit to investigating all their issues and to get back to
Pat with answers.

We suggest that you email the problems you had getting broadband to
todaypk@rte.ie (please send a copy to info@irelandOffline.org too) and
Pat’s team will compile them into a file and send them to eircom.
Please include some contact details. In a months time we suggest you
come back to us and Pat Kenny and let us know whether anything has
been done to fix your problems getting broadband.

We’d also like to thank everyone that’s sent in a submission to the
Minister in regards to broadband availability. The closing date for
submissions is tomorrow and if you have not sent in something yet,
then we suggest you do, even if it is just a few short lines. The
Minister and the Government need to understand that there is a large
proportion of the population that are in need of broadband and cannot
get it instead of them doing their best to blame lack of interest as
the reason for the digital divide.

There were some lovely nice people in Dublin city center today, who decided to riot. Love that, since we didn’t remember about it til we were there. We showed up *after* the majority of the hell, but while waiting to pick up a computer part in Maplin’s, either a small bomb or a firework went off down the road from the store.

Regardless, Flickr already has photos of the incident today.

The Irish blogosphere is slowly growing, and it’s a close knit bunch. First, there’s the Irish Blog Awards coming up. And then Damien suggested that people take a peek at some of the Irish photoblogs that are out there. I did so (cause Damien’s, well, Damien), and found this from Rymus that I love. Gimme some flowing water and some green stuff in it, and I will sit and look at it for *hours*. Then I saw that Caitriona has a bunch of pics from the Dun Laoghaire Sunday Market down the road from us. Gave me warm fuzzies.

OMG, Ikea is lodging a planning permission file with Fingal County Council today to build their (hopefully) new store in Ballymun. That’s on the other side of Dublin….I CANT WAIT!!!!

I did it. I decided. I went with the Nokia 6230i, mainly cause I liked the interface. Even if it didn’t use iSync with my iBook, I found (and bought) a program called Phone Director, which allows the Nokia 6230, 6230i, 7280, 7380, 8800 all to connect to the Mac, with more info and easier use than iSync. Loving this. I’ve tricked out the phone with my Serenity wallpaper, ringtones, message tones, and I’m working on getting the “No power in the ‘verse” as my startup sound :-).

Mucho thanks to Marie at the Tullamore Carphone Warehouse for dealing with dummy me who didn’t think things through about half the stuff we did!!

I should have the same number (for those of you who have it) once the porting from Vodafone to Meteor is done.

Thanks to a mention in one of Adam Curry’s podcasts, I learned that The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is carried on the More4 channel in the UK. Our digital cable company in Ireland added the channel in December.

So now our MythTV box can happily grab it at 9:30pm each night for our enjoyment later. Only recently I discovered a pieced-together weekend The Daily Show: Global Edition airing once a week on CNN. While that was a great first step, this is now so much cooler. 🙂

Karlin Lillington, a tech writer based in Dublin and one of the best in Ireland, wrote an article in the Irish Times about the crappy way the EU rushed through the data retention scheme and how ultimately embarassing it is for all of us. Luckily, since the IT is a pay site, Karlin posted it to her blog as well. Good on ya. Someone that the gov might actually listen to, considering they’re not listening to the average Joe on this one.

I’d like to get a new one. I don’t like the Motorola interface, really. I do like Nokia’s, but I haven’t played around with many other phones. I can get an upgrade from Vodafone now…

I was looking at the Nokia 6820 (aka E70). I like to text, but I like querty more :-). A good camera is helpful. MP3 option…eh. No biggie for me. Sync’ing with OSX would be good (but I have to research more on that). I don’t want a PIM, cause I have a Filofax that I love.

My laptop, a Fujitsu Lifebook P-2046, was recently sent in for service because it wouldn’t consistently charge its batteries. After some testing, they found my AC adapter is at fault. They can send my laptop back with a new one, if I’d like—for €150 + 21% VAT to a total of €181.50. That’s about $229.00 US. Or, I could get one from a company in the US for $49 and figure out a way to get it to me here in Ireland.

I asked them to just send it back, please. Why is everything so blatantly overpriced?
